FDA Panel is Chaired by the SAME CHARLATAN!

The new Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration is chaired by the same fraudster, Jonathan M. Samet, Harvard 1966, who has ring-led every previous major anti-smoker initiative since the 1980s, and systematically lied and committed fraud in each and every one of them.

The anti-smokers lie that their various reports on secondhand smoke are "independent." But they were all produced by Jonathan M. Samet and a little clique of his close cronies! And every one of them is based on the scientific fraud of deliberately ignoring, or failing to adequately account for, the role of infection in diseases blamed on smoking.

Jon Samet has been an anti-smoking activist since the Fifth World Conference on Smoking and Health in 1983. He was one of three "consulting scientific editors" and "prepared draft chapters or portions" of the 1986 Surgeon General Report, "The Health Consequences of Involuntary Smoking," and was also involved in the 1984, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2004 SG Reports, and was Senior Scientific Editor of the 2006 Surgeon General Report, "The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke." He was also a member of the Science Advisory Board of the so-called "EPA" Report on ETS, the key chapters of which were actually secretly written by an anti-smoking activist crony of Samet's, using illegal pass-through contracts to conceal his role. Samet was Chairman of the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) committee which produced the fraudulent Monograph on Smoking and Involuntary Smoking in 2003. In 2005, Samet and three anti-smoking activist cronies formed a majority of the voting board of the ASHRAE Position Document on ETS. In addition, he committed perjury in 1998 in the State of Minnesota lawsuit against the cigarette companies, and testified in the US Department of Justice lawsuit against them as well. He was a contributing author and editor of the 2010 Surgeon General's Report, How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease: The Biology and Behavioral Basis for Smoking-Attributable Disease, and three of his adminstrative underlings (Roberta B. Gray, Nancy Leonard, and Deborah Williams) were also involved in the report. He is the head of the FDA Tobacco Panel, whose defamatory labels were declared unsconstitutional, and was an editor yet again of the 2012 Surgeon General Report, Preventing Tobacco Use Among Youth and Young Adults.

Jonathan Michael Samet was born in 1946 in Virginia. Education: AB, Harvard Coll., 1966; MD, U. Rochester, 1970; MS, Harvard Sch. Pub Health, 1977 [epidemiology]. He was an intern in medicine at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington, from 1970-71, and was with the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1973. He was a research fellow in clinical epidemiology at Channing laboratory at Harvard Medical School, Boston, from 1975-78, and a research associate in medicine at Harvard Medical School from 1978 to 1983. He was Secretary-Treasurer 1982-83, Vice President 1983-84, and President 1984-85 of the New Mexico Thoracic Society. He was a member of the Science Advisory Board of the EPA committee on indoor air quality and total human exposure [the "EPA" ETS report] from 1987 to 1995. He has been professor and chairman of the Department of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University since 1994. (Marquis Who's Who TM. Marquis Who's Who, 2007.) From 1978 to 1994, he was Assistant Professor to Professor, Department of Medicine, University of New Mexico School of Medicine at Albuquerque. At JHU, he is Director of the Institute for Global Tobacco Control and Co-Director of the Risk Sciences and Public Policy Institute. He is a past president of the American College of Epidemiology. Martha S. Linet of the NCI is on the Board of Directors, and ETS study author Elizabeth T.H. Fontham is Treasurer.

Samet has been a ringleader of anti-smoking activism since the 1980s, including Surgeon General Reports (including the latest, in 2004, as Senior Scientific Editor), the National Academy of Science report, the "EPA" ETS report (which was secretly written by Samet's personal cronies), the WHO report (as Chairman), and the "ASHRAE" report, as well as testifying in the Minnesota tobacco lawsuit, the federal lawsuit, and other anti-smoking travesties of the law. In other words, contrary to the anti-smokers' false representations, these were not "independent" evaluations at all!

Jonathan Samet's Global Empire of Anti-Smoking Lies, Persecution and Corruption

Samet is conducting a study of "Second Hand Tobacco Smoke Exposure in Women and Children," whose goal is "To generate a global profile of SHS exposure among women and children and estimate the associated health risks." In other words, Samet intends to use exposure measurements to concoct phony estimates of pretended ETS deaths. He deceives the public by pretending that these are "scientific" estimates merely because they use hair and airborne nicotine samples, rather than lifestyle questionnaires only, to determine exposure. But those supposed "health risks" are still nothing but lies, because those pretended "risks" are all based upon the scientific fraud of deliberately using defective studies that ignore the role of infection. The human papillomavirus, a known carcinogenic virus, is known to be involved in over ten times more lung cancers than the anti-smoking charlatans pretend are caused by secondhand smoke - and they are automatically guilty of scientific fraud for ignoring this fact! And the charlatans will be using the data to generate fraudulent "health risks" for other illnesses as well.

Samet thanked A. Samet was the author of Chapter 5, "Environmental Tobacco Smoke and Cancer," in the May 1991 draft version of the EPA Technical Compendium, which was concocted by the US Environmental Protection Agency before its report was even completed. The Health Effects Institute

Jonathan Samet is a member of the Health Research Committee of the Health Effects Institute, which dupes the automotive industry into funding its enemies' junk science. The Health Effects Institute funded his 1991 article, "The environment and the lung. Changing perspectives," which shows that Samet already had his mind made up that environmental tobacco smoke caused lung cancer in non-smokers. The EPA ETS Report

Samet was a member of the Science Advisory Board of the EPA ETS report. In a classic example of black disinformation, the Associated Press smeared that members of the SAB who served on the review panel of the Center for Indoor Air Research, including arch anti-smoker Jonathan M. Samet, were tainted by ties to the tobacco industry, and claimed that Geoffrey C. Kabat, an author of ETS studies who was affiliated with the American Health Foundation, had been recommended by Philip Morris. Jonathan Samet's Perjury About Heart Disease

Perjury: 1. the willful telling of a lie while under lawful oath or affirmation to tell the truth in a matter material to the point of inquiry. 2. the breaking of any oath or formal promise. Jonathan Samet, the anti-smokers' star perjuror about the supposed health risks of smoking at the Minnesota tobacco trial, makes Bill Clinton look like George Washington.

In the State of Minnesota & Blue Cross-Blue Shield vs. the tobacco industry (the Minnesota tobacco trial), Jonathan M. Samet of The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health was the anti-smokers' star witness on smoking and health. He relied on old, defective studies in order to ignore the role of infection in causing the diseases blamed on smoking. Samet knew about the links between infection and heart disease, but said nothing at the Minnesota tobacco trial.

The mysterious disappearance of investigation of the role of infection in atherosclerosis is noted in the review by F. Javier Nieto, "Infections and atherosclerosis: New clues from an old hypothesis?" (Am J Epidemiology 1998;148(10):937-948; no abstract available online):

"The inability of 'traditional' risk factors such as hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, and smoking to completely explain the incidence and trends in cardiovascular diseases has resulted in repeated calls for a search for 'new risk factors.' Recently, infections have been placed among these new putative risk factors. This commentary reviews the historical antecedents of the infectious hypothesis, which is actually one of the oldest etiologic theories of atherosclerosis. Because inflammation may mediate the putative atherogenic role of infections, the historical antecedents that have discussed a possible role of inflammation in atherogenesis are also briefly reviewed. [Comment: It is not just that the so-called traditional risk factors fail to "completely" explain heart disease rates; it is that some 40% or more of heart attack victims have none of those supposed risk factors whatsoever -cast.]

"This review demonstrates that inflammation and infection were considered as possibly atherogenic more than a century ago. However, these hypotheses were all but completely abandoned early in the present century, coinciding with a shift in paradigms in the pathogenetic theories of atherogenesis, i.e., with the development of the multifactorial model of causation of chronic ('non-infectious') diseases. [Comment: the so-called "shift in paradigms" consisted of the Lasker Lobby taking over our health establishment and deliberately suppressing research on the role of infection, in order to ram their health fascist ideology down the public's throats, e.g., How the Public Was Brainwashed About Heart Disease -cast]

"Striking resemblances are apparent between current research on the putative atherogenic role of infections and research on the topic that was conducted up to one century ago. The synthesis of past and current evidence reviewed here suggests the following hypotheses and clues for further studies: 1) that the study of a possible atherogenic role of infections should be extended to infectious agents other than the three that have been the focus of research in recent years (herpesvirus - mainly cytomegalovirus (CMV), Chlamydia pneumoniae, and Helicobacter pylori); 2) that the introduction of antibiotic therapies in the 1940s and 1950s may have contributed to the decline in coronary heart disease incidence and mortality observed in the Western hemisphere in the last three decades; 3) that infections could be one of the mediating factors in the association between low socioeconomic status (SES) and coronary disease; and 4) that infections in childhood could also be one of the confounding factors that explain the alleged association between birth/childhood weight and coronary disease in adulthood."

Comment

He has failed to mention 5) that infection, in combination with smokers' lower socioeconomic status, could be the confounding factor that explains the alleged association between smoking and cardiovascular disease, and also 6) that infection, in combination with passive smokers' lower socioeconomic status, could be the confounding factor that explains the alleged association between passive smoking and cardiovascular disease. Remember: the autopsy study by Davidson et al. found an odds ratio of 10 for antibodies to Chlamydia pneumoniae versus development of atherosclerosis, in young persons in whom the precipitating causes have not been obscured by age. An odds ratio of this magnitude is fully capable of producing spurious risks by confounding, as Phillips & Smith (1994) demonstrated. But this is typical of the dishonesty with which the subject is treated by the health establishment.

This article was written to provide historical background for the recent intense interest about infection in cardiovascular disease. Dr. Jonathan Samet, the anti-smokers' star perjuror at the Minnesota tobacco trial, was one of Nieto's fellow editors at the American Journal of Epidemiology, and would have been aware of this development as well. In the "Acknowledgements" at the end of the article, Nieto thanks Samet and others for reading and criticizing previous drafts of his manuscript. Although it was submitted in June, a few months after Samet's testimony in February, this 11-page paper with 137 references must have taken considerable time to prepare. The old references in particular cannot be found by a search of Medline, whose listings don't begin until around 1965, so they would have had to be tracked down via later citations. Yet despite having sworn under oath that he had conducted an "extensive review" on the topic of smoking and health, Samet mentioned not a word about infection in his testimony about the risk factors for coronary heart disease or stroke. Nor did the tobacco industry's awesomely incompetent counsel, Mr. Garnick, ever broach the subject during his cross-examination of Samet. And so the anti-smokers' single largest health claim against smoking (not to mention the source of about 94% of pretended secondhand smoke deaths) was allowed to pass without challenge.

By 1998, Helicobacter pylori infection had been unquestionably established as the primary cause of gastric and duodenal ulcers, and an inexpensive course of antibiotics was the cure. This cure meant that ulcers were no longer a chronic, incurable disease, and made its previous treatment by surgery obsolete. Jonathan Samet and Barbara K. Rimer of the National Cancer Institute's hate-mongering Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (the home until 2000 of Donald Shopland, whose anti-smoking activism dated from the 1964 Surgeon General report) are co-chairs of the Mott Selection Committee of the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation. The winners of the 2001 Charles S. Mott Prize were anti-smokers (and NIH Fat Cats) Frank E. Speizer and Walter C. Willett. Jon & Frank just happen to both be at the automotive industry-funded Health Effects Institute, and Walter Willett is a funding fat cat of the NCI.

The NERC and Lovelace Respiratory Research Center

"Jonathan M. Samet has been involved with LRRI for almost 30 years. He is currently on the LRRI Research Program Oversight Committee. He began collaborating with the Institute when he was a faculty member at the University of New Mexico in the early 1980s," and was on its Board of Directors in Fall of 2010. (Breathe Magazine A Publication of the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, Fall 2010, p. 18.) Research!America Directors Mary Woolley and Leon E. Rosenberg were on the Board of Directors of LRRI circa 1997, where the National Environmental Respiratory Center is located. "NERC was initiated with funds designated by Congress in the EPA appropriation, but was envisioned from the beginning as an effort funded by multiple federal and state agencies, industry associations, individual companies, and other ogranizations." Jonathan Samet was on the External Scientific Advisory Committee of NERC, along with Morton Lippmann, Chairman of the EPA Science Advisory Board that produced the EPA's corrupt report on secondhand smoke. The Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute has a major ideological conflict of interest. LRRI has licensed nested methylation-specific PCR to Oncomethylome Sciences. The star of the 2010 Surgeon General report chapter on how tobacco smoke supposedly causes cancer, Steven A. Belinsky, is a royalty-entitled consultant to Oncomethylome Sciences. His reports which are cited therein are designed to falsely blame smoking for methylation of genes by ignoring the role of infection. Those studies deliberately exploit the fact that smokers are more likely to have been exposed to these infections, for socioeconomic reasons.

Samet was on the Board of Scientific Counselors of Intramural Programs at the National Cancer Institute.

National Childen's Study

Samet and Phillip J. Landrigan, the pediatrician featured on ABC TV's Good Morning America program, are on the Advisory Committee of the National Children's Study, a US government-funded prospective following 100,000 kids from birth to age 21. As usual, chronic infection is a neglected concern.

Jonathan M. Samet was Chairman of the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) committee which produced the fraudulent Monograph on Smoking and Involuntary Smoking (Monograph 83, 2003).

A: That's right. He was the director of my fellowship and a mentor. Dr. Speizer trained in epidemiology with Sir Richard Doll.
Q: Who is Sir Richard Doll?
A: Richard Doll has long been one of the field's preeminent epidemiologists. He did much of the pioneering work on cigarette smoking and diseases beginning in the late 1940s extending into the 1950s and remarkably to the present day. I'll be describing some of the findings of his work, particularly with regard to the well known follow-up study or cohort study that he conducted of about 34,000 male and 6,000 female British Doctors. [sic - Richard Doll is incompetent dinosaur who ignores infection as a cause of cancer blamed on smoking!]
Q: Did Dr. Speizer start any similar studies?
A: Yes. He started the Nurses’ Health Study, a very well-known follow-up study of over 100,000 U.S. nurses. It's a very important and well-regarded study of the effects of smoking and other factors on health. Dr. Speizer has won several prestigious awards including the Ochsner Award for research contributions to the study of smoking and health and he shared the Mott Prize, given by the General Motors Cancer Foundation, with Walter Willett.
Q: Did you do any original research regarding smoking and disease with Dr. Speizer?
A: Yes, during my years in Boston and subsequently.

Q: Have you been accepted previously to testify as an expert witness?
A: I testified as an expert witness in the State of Minnesota and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota case in 1998 as an expert in the science of smoking and health. Subsequently, I testified as an expert in the Engle suit in Florida and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey case in the United States District Court in Brooklyn in 2001. I also testified in as an expert in two administrative proceedings: before the Federal Trade Commission as an expert against R.J. Reynolds in the Joe Camel proceeding about six years ago and in 1994, on behalf of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) with regard to its proposed rule on indoor air quality.

Jonathan Samet's perjury about smoking and cervical cancer: Samet claimed that "smokers are at higher risk for malignancy of the cervix, once HPV infection has taken place." (page 105) The studies he relied upon are defective, because they did not considerHPV reinfection by the male partner, nor did they consider the effect of infection by multiple strains of the virus. As usual, these corrupt charlatans are exploiting residual confounding.

Jonathan Samet's perjury about smoking and liver cancer: Samet claimed, without any justication, that "smoking causes liver cancer." (page 107). No questions whatsoever were even asked about confounding by hepatitis viruses B and C. In fact, Samet personally committed fraud by confounding in a study of which he was a co-author. He also ignored the known role of human papillomavirus in esophageal, laryngeal and bladder cancer, and the roles of Helicobacter pylori and Epstein-Barr virus in stomach cancer. He lied that smoking causes heart disease as well, because the death rates from this have fallen as much among smokers as among non-smokers - which is consistent with a shared underlying cause to which smokers are more likely to be exposed, but inconsistent with a causal role for smoking.

And, strokes are known to be associated with infection as well, and aneurysms with Chlamydia pneumonia. And Samet's claim that "maternal smoking causes 1) premature rupture of the membranes, placenta previa, and placental abruption; 2) pre-term delivery and shortened gestation; and 3) fetal growth restriction and low birth weight," are based upon the deliberate scientific fraud is deliberately using defective studies that ignored that causal role of chorioamnionitis - which is underscored by the complete failure of these lying charlatans to reduce the rates of these perinatal illnesses. In that year, Samet was also a co-author of a defective study designed to falsely blame smoking for liver cancer caused by hepatitis viruses.
