NIH Announces Public-Access Policy

"Starting in April, most U.S. biomedical scientists will have to send copies of their accepted, peer-reviewed manuscripts to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) for posting in a free archive. If they don't, they could have trouble renewing their grants or even lose research funding. That's the gist of NIH's announcement today describing how it will carry out a new "public access" mandate. The directive, touted as a way to disseminate results of taxpayer-funded research, was part of an NIH spending law passed by Congress in December. It makes mandatory a policy in effect since May 2005 that requests that NIH-funded investigators submit accepted manuscripts to NIH, which posts the full text in its free PubMed Central archive no more than 12 months after the article is published in a journal. Most grantees have ignored the request: Of roughly 65,000 eligible articles per year, only about 12% are being submitted by authors, says David Lipman of NIH's National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland." Now, if only Science would allow more public access.

Hans-Olav Adami

Adami is a co-author of "Cigarette smoking and non-Hodgkins lymphoma -- a population-based case-control study;" also "Tobacco use and cancer causation," and similar quacky screeds. They igmore the fact that Hodgkin's Disease is associated with Epstein-Barr virus infection, which occurs earlier as well as more frequently in the lower socioeconomic classes, of which smokers are more likely to belong. Adami's latest (9-09-05) is "Causality in Cancer Epidemiology. Eur J Epidemiol 2005;20(7):565-574," co-authored with another bad apple, Dimitrios Trichopoulos, with whom he has often collaborated. They are among the last people who are entitled to make pronouncements about causality!

Kudos to PLoS Med for this one: Serotonin and Depression: A Disconnect between the Advertisements and the Scientific Literature. JR Lacasse, J Leo. PLoS Med 2005 Dec;2(12):e392.

PLoS Medicine published a piece of specious anti-smoker propaganda, which claimed that "The tobacco industry has worked hard to try and influence public perceptions about the risks of smoking and the risk of inhaling secondhand smoke (passive smoking). The industry has used a variety of tactics to downplay the health hazards of smoking or inhaling secondhand smoke—two examples are publishing articles casting doubts about the health hazards of tobacco and funding research that is biased toward giving pro-industry results." PLoS Med refused to publish my response pointing out that - "The anti-smokers are guilty of flagrant scientific fraud for ignoring more than 50 studies, which show that human papillomaviruses cause over ten times more lung cancers than they pretend are caused by secondhand smoke. Passive smokers are more likely to have been exposed to this virus, so the anti-smokers' studies, because they are all based on nothing but lifestyle questionnaires, have been cynically DESIGNED to falsely blame passive smoking for all those extra lung cancers that are really caused by HPV."

PLoS Ignores Anti-Smoker Conflicts of Interest

This is an excellent, well-documented comment. However, this is still just an individual conflict-of-interest story, and not evidence that the pharmaceutical companies' desire for profits are the force behind the anti-smoking movement.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is really an IDEOLOGICAL organization, whose goal is to push totalitarian public policies based on Nazi pseudo-science. It is fundamentally a PARASITE on the company, not an essential driver of its profits. Notice that none of the other companies have an equivalent of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation!

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation actually represents the goals of the anti-scientific SOCIALITE LOBBY, not the financial interests of the company or the industry. The company is merely a host of the parasite. And, while the company has to meet stringent scientific requirements which satisfy the FDA in order to market its products, the anti-scientific mentality the Foundation promotes does not. THE ALL-POWERFUL SOCIALITE LOBBY, which consists in large part of filthy-rich people who are not engaged in business (or for that matter, working at all except at managing the people who manage their money), are the ones who push scientific fraud. This includes the Johnson family themselves.

They are the ones who support those studies based on nothing but lifestyle questionnaires, which ignore the role of infection. They are ones who want to falsely blame smoking, and to lie to the public that most of their health problems are because they didn't their eat their magic fruits and vegetables and exercise. What these people want is not to sell drugs, but to create a gigantic tax-funded edifice of totalitarian control over every detail of our personal lives, all based on Nazi pseudo-science. These are the people who control the politicians, AND the corporations.

And the stupid people who point their fingers at the pharmaceutical companies are HELPING THE SOCIALITE LOBBY by distracting attention from it - not to mention that most of these people actually believe in the Socialite Lobby's worthless bilge and try to shove it down our throats at every opportunity!

His chapter on Livingston and the cancer microbe is also interesting. Here are some details not noted by Moss. Livingston said that cancer was caused by a microorganism which she named Progenitor cryptocides. Some anonymous author(s) in the health establishment claim that "Careful research using modern techniques, however, has shown that there is no such organism and that Livingston-Wheeler has apparently mistaken several different types of bacteria, both rare and common, for a unique microbe. In spite of diligent research to isolate a cancer-causing microorganism, none has been found" (Livingston-Wheeler therapy. CA Cancer J Clin 1990 Mar-Apr;40(2):103-108; and CA Cancer J Clin 1991 May-Jun;41(3):A7-A12). It should be remembered that much of the health establishment of that time denied even that Helicobacter pylori caused duodenal ulcers, for example. And it would be nice if some of this "diligent research" had been published. A search of PubMed under "Progenitor cryptocides" turned up only five articles, including those two (which appear to be duplicates).
